Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening
Men aged 65 years and over - Can you spare 10 minutes? It could save your life. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a weakening of the aorta (artery) wall, in the tummy that leads to a balloon like swelling. It can be serious if it is not spotted early because it could get bigger and eventually burst (rupture). AAA's are most common in men over the age of 65 and usually have no signs or symptoms so you won't know you have one.

AAA screening is a free NHS national screening programme that invites men aged 65 plus to attend an appointment to check if they have an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The screening uses an ultrasound scan which is quick, safe and pain free and results are given straight after the scan on the day. You will receive your invitation letter, with an appointment, sometime in the year you turn 65. Men over 65 who have not been screened and have not previously been diagnosed with a AAA can self refer into the programme by contacting the local screening service on 0191 445 8747 to request a scan.
The North East of England and North Cumbria AAA Screening Service is hosted by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead but you will be invited to a clinic local to where you live for your appointment. This service covers; North Yorkshire to Berwick and North Cumbria localities.
